To know more about Ratnam Pens, Let's visit Rajahmundry in East Godavari District. The city had made some great contributions during fight for Independence. The city became a center for support for all the people who believed that Independence can be achieved by write ups, poetry and mainly who believed in peace.
The rise of Ratnam pens has started in 1921, when Mahatma Gandhi called for "Swadeshi Moment". Many people started to contribute something, So a goldsmith named Kosuri Ratnam also thought to contribute something from his side to the nation. In the due process he firstly designed Mahatma Gandhi's Lithoblock and gifted it to Gandhiji. After receiving the gift Gandhiji told Ratnam to inspire others to serve the nation. This sentence from Gandhiji encouraged Ratnam to design first Swadeshi Pen. It took so much of hard work, patience and time to establish a company named "Ratnam" in 1932. Many people started using these pens to write letters, to influence others by their writeups and for different purposes. Ratnam was always supported by his brother through out his journey. After manufacturing some pens, he sent few pens to Gandhiji through post. But, Gandhiji was not satisfied with the work and wrote a letter to Ratnam saying, "The pens look similar to foreign pens." The letter from Gandhiji disappointed Ratnam and also at the same time motivated him to redesign the pens. In 1935, July 16 there was a letter from Gandhiji to Ratnam saying, " Dear Ratnam,
I received the pen sent through Kumarappa, Thank you for this. This pen is very much useful for me and it is very different when compared to foreign pens. "
These are few lines from the letter from Gandhiji. The news that, Gandhiji was using Ratnam pen, started spreading very fast through out the nation. Later, many great leaders started using these pens. For the years of hard work, patience and time, Ratnam pens were recognized as "Swadeshi Pens". Even today the family of Ratnam is involved in this work. Few years ago the family created a record by designing smallest pen in the world.
