The BirdMan

Back in 1896, on November 12 a boy was born in a hunter's family. When he was at the age of ten, he shot a bird and thought that it was a sparrow. But when he went close to the bird, it was very different. Immediately he asked his uncle about the bird. His uncle couldn't answer, but he took the boy to nearby 'Bombay natural History society'. After seeing the samples of different birds, the boy was able to get the answer.

The boy I was speaking is none other then Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali,also known as Birdman of India. Many of us don't know about him, but the character portrayed by Akshay Kumar in Robo 2.O was based on his life. The incident that took place when he was 10, later on helped him to become a great Ornithologist. He was not interested in studies, so he did not even complete his degree. Later the family moved to Burma for their mining business. While he was in Burma, he observed different kinds of sparrows flying in forest areas. These incidents encouraged him to do B.A honors in Zoology. Later he joined as a clerk in Bombay natural History society. He always wanted to know the behavior of birds. Later he went to Germany, England for his research. After returning to India, he started spending more time on birds. So, he contacted Hyderabad ornithological Survey and made an agreement with them. He went to different places in search of birds, with a Binocular around his neck and always carried notes and pencils. Reports say that in India there are 1200 kinds of birds. He recorded all his findings in his books named 'The Book of Indian birds', 'Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan'. Keeping in mind the incident that happened when he was 10years, he named his autobiography as "The Fall of a Sparrow". For his contribution in the field of ornithology Indian Government honored him with "Padma Vibhushan" and "Padma Bhushan". He always stood against hunting the birds. This great man passed away on June 20,1987.
