Soldier No-1446
If we visit Barrackpore, near kolkata, there will be a statue of a person up to his chest part and below the statue there will be some lines written as , " Mangal Pandey, Soldier Number-1446, Regiment 34, attacked British officials on march 29,1857 ".
What actually happened on march 29, 1857? Mangal Pandey was a soldier in British army. Why did he attack the British officers?. Reports say that few days before the incident took place, British army started distributing bullets to it's soldiers. The bullets which were supplied by the British army were made from pigs and cows fat, and were dipped in grease, in-order to reduce the friction. When Mangal Pandey got to know about this, he was not able to take the news. He immediately started shouting,"All of you come out, If we open these bullets with our mouth, then we are committing a great mistake which is opposed by our culture, Come lets start opposing this". Meanwhile he attacked two of his officials present over there. Immediately one of the commanding officer visited the place to analyse the situation, seeing the officers visit, Mangal Pandey shooted himself and injured himself . Why did he shoot himself ? Reports say that Pandey wanted to kill himself rather then being killed by the British. Later, the British soldiers caught him and presented him in front of soldiers court. After looking into the case, the court ordered the British army to hang Mangal Pandey on April 18,1857. But he was hanged ten days before the date given by the court. Later the British army also punished the Indian soldiers present over there while the incident took place. Even today many people believe that 1857 Sepoy Mutney took place because of Mangal pandey's inspiration. There is also a big confusion about Mangal Pandey's native place. Some people say that he was born in Nagva, Ballia dist., Uttar Pradesh. Some say that he was born in Surhurpur, Uttar Pradesh. But there are no proper proofs regarding his native place. On march 29th,1857 he was alone, but on may 10, 1857 many people started protesting, which we call "Sepoy Mutney". One man gave a great start to a big moment.
